Racist Yoga Studios and their owners.

Yoga‘ is derived from the Sanskrit root ‘Yuj’, meaning ‘to join’ or ‘to yoke’ or ‘to unite’. As per Yogic scriptures the practice of Yoga leads to the union of individual consciousness with that of the Universal Consciousness, indicating a perfect harmony between the mind and body, Man/Woman & Nature.

When I tell people from Trinidad that I do yoga. I often get the respond of “oh that is a white girl thing”. Okay what now….I am brown. But how the F@ck did yoga become a white girl thing?.

Are they right though ?. I mean when I do a “google” search and clink images there it is the perfect size two, white girl, blue eyes holding a asana and looking ever so blissful. Just look at the images I found by two websites that I use for my blog. All I did was type in Yoga and that is what my results were. Not one representation of any colour or different body types.

It’s when I left a Yoga Studio (Trinidad)  because they seems to only want to accommodate to the Rich, Slim and White or Passing White, that  I noticed the racism and almost left yoga completely.

Yoga is not just for the rich, famous , slim or young. Yoga is for everyone. Too often are we seeing yoga studios only advertising an air brushed look of what yoga is about. Owners of these studios have to realize that there main stream advertising may look polished on Instagram, but it’s actually doing more harm to our yoga community.

As a curvy  38 year old woman of colour, I do not feel like I belong to these Yoga Studios or Yoga Communities, that only want to PUSH the skinny white girl vibe. Yoga Studios need to represents : “Yoga for is for everyone”, regardless of gender, race, financial status, size, sexual orientation.

Yoga Studio owners can start with their advertising and demolish the false representation of “what yoga is supposed to look like”. Yoga Studio owners can have a variety of different teachers on their schedule. This allows students to get a variety of teachings and see that not all yoga teachers are white, slim, and young.

If you join a yoga studio that is mis-repenting the “Union of Yoga” LEAVE that studio please. Yoga is such a beautiful practice that everyone should try it at least once in a safe and comfortable environment. It might take you going to a few studios before you can find one. Hang in there because now more then ever people like me are speaking up and changes are being made.

I have followed Reyna Cohan on Instagram (when I had IG) and found her knowlwegde on yoga to be comforting, She’s not small, yes she is passing white, but she will call anyone out who is just not representing or including all people into Yoga.

The Unfiltered TRUTH about healing and getting to a place of SELF-LOVE.
